Barley wine is a style of beer which gets it's name from being of an alcoholic strength approaching wine. Originating in England, barley wines are even stronger versions of what are known as strong ales. Designed to be sipped rather than slurped, barley wines many times have complex flavours of dried fruits, caramel, spices, or toast which are derived from the yeast and massive amounts of barley used to create these beers. Those who successfully master this monster of a style are held in high regard amongst their brewer peers as every step of the process tests the limits of the brewer's skill, patience, equipment, and knowledge. Most barley wines will benefit with some age. One year is good, three if you can. Some will age well for 25 years or more, but who has that kind of will power?
