Imperial IPAs are essentially more extreme versions of IPAs.  Alcohol content and hop bitterness, aroma, and flavour are amplified with a malt profile that generally ranges from very clean to providing an accent to the hops, however "imperial" versions of any IPA sub styles can be found (eg: imperial red IPA).
